Schumacher councillor expresses frustration with state of his ward
There was plenty of trash talking going on at the end of Tuesday’s city council meeting, with Ward 3 Coun. Joe Campbell clearly not impressed with the state of streets in Schumacher.
“I was out of town for a few days and I got back today (Tuesday) to a firestorm of complaints from residents of Schumacher about the garbage and the dirt that is one the streets,” he said.
“I can go back to when Vito Rubino was there daily keeping the streets relatively clean.
“He was not replaced after he retired and it has been downhill ever since.
“If you want some examples, drive past 55 Father Costello Dr. It is the same people who are violating things, time after time, and it is time we consider having a person going there every day.
“If we don’t take pride in our streets, as a council, how are we going to expect our residents to do that?
Happy to hear that city council is fed up about the litter, garbage and derelict building within the city. If people. land owners and landlords are held accountable and fined this is the only way people get the message. Thank you city council
Go Joe Campbell! I really hope this goes somewhere. I was glad to read that other councillors acknowledge the issue as well because it’s not just a Schumacher issue
Council has let this issue slide by them in the past over and over in every section of our city, until the masses complain and complain and have some residents even threatened to pick up the mess and dump it on City Hall Steps, a serious extreme. This year, something is changing. Councilors Auger and Curley have been vocal for us and involved with our submitted complaints to Service Timmins. We in the East End of the city, have the same problem every year all year round (not just summer time) and some of the problems fall directly on the city. When you cut back on landfill days and times, it falls on your plate,(please do not say you have just changed to summer hours at the sites, that may be true in Timmins proper but NO where else and distance does make a difference), just drive down any of our city back roads Stringer, Murphy and so many more, When your staff is not educated on the procedures for picking up litter (may it be to pick it up before cutting grass, or snow removal, or seeing a bag on the side of the highway/roadway, that has fallen off someones truck and you drive right by it several times in a city vehicle), it falls on your plate, When the public has submitted to Service Timmins (a great service but sometimes overwhelmed) and no response but a number is given. The public should not have to submit more than ONE time if this service works well. Thank you Councilor Campbell for taking a lead here. Schumacher is unique in its own with (many apartments, narrower streets for garbage day pick ups and a huge bear problem) again as in all areas of the city; City Hall education and Public education, Public pride, Public health need to be addressed. We can all do better. We need to do better. We need a clean city from every direction. Volunteers doing the City of Timmins clean up is not a solution it is a crutch. The solution falls within council and city administration and management direction. It would be great to say “We live in the cleanest city in Canada” and have it a reality. Get out in the field. See it with your own eyes. Make the drives. Be part of the change. See what is going on. Just get it done.
